History

The archaeological Museum “Il Compito” was founded around 1930 in order to collect the antiquities of the area and to avoid the misplacement of ancient materials (which happened for centuries). The museum is named after its founder, the priest don Giorgio Franchini, and it was housed in San Giovanni in Compito.

The “Compito” is still characterized by a rural area full of archaeological ruins, especially around the Pieve (parish) and along  the “Via Emilia”, the main road of this area.
This aspect was probably more evident in 1926, when don Giorgio Franchini became parish of the Pieve. He was very interested in preserving the ruins of the Pieve, which was itself built with used materials. He started by putting inside it some remains of big columns and several architectural pieces that were lying in the churchyard (picture 1).  The Pieve was the first center of the museum, but the real collection of ancient items was organized a few years later in the pastor’s house. In this way the ruins that could not be exhibited inside the church (picture 2) because of their size and nature, could be collected and shown.
Meanwhile Don Franchini’s collection became larger and larger and was composed of: archaeological fragments, architectural clay decorations belonging to the republican era, thousands of coins, bronzes, glass and clay objects and even fossils.
Some of the show cases of the museum were stolen in 1978. Many antiquities, among which an Etruscan pot , some bronze figurines and Roman coins, got lost forever.
Luckily other rests were found and are now shown in the museum.
The museum re-opened in 1998, after 20 years of inactivity. The new location is not far from the Pieve of San Giovanni in Compito, which is still a part of the museum.
