Roman age - The ceramic

Any kind of ceramic, also the Roman one, can be classified into two groups: fine ceramic, aimed for the meals, and ceramic for use, aimed for cooking. Ceramics found in the Compito area belong to both groups.
The fine ceramic of the republican era is the so called blackvarnish ceramic, because of its colour. There are many finds of it in the Compito that could be dated to the I century B.C.

Ceramic in the Imperial age instead, is red and is often decorated by stamps or by the seals of the potter. That is why it is also called sealed soil. There are some finds of this kind in the Compito and also some belonging to the middle imperial age from Romagna, the so called “middle-adriatic sealed soil”, with painted embossed decorations. There are also many fragments of  very thin ceramic which imitates pieces in metal or in glass.

As far as ceramic for use is concerned, there are many fragments of ceramic for fire: pots or saucepans of various dimensions for cooking food. There are also fragments of  other kinds of vases: for fruits , ashes or fire lamps.

Manyfragments of amphora have been found too, but just one black lamp was found in a tomb and one fragment of terracotta with impressed decorations.
